"Hey Chief, Cover Your Six!" - IACP Technology Policy Framework

Senior level law enforcement professionals have an awful lot on their plate, and the pace of technological advancement keeps heaping it on faster and faster. Bleeding edge and cutting edge technologies are absolutely necessary in the military and law enforcement, but so is common sense. Take for instance the plethora of stories over the last year or so on Harris Corporation’s Stingray and Hailstorm.

Products like the Stingray have been used by the military and law enforcement for decades (Yes, literally for decades). Bleeding edge technology almost always rears its beautiful head at the federal level first, of course. And while the military and federal LE agencies struggle just as much with these issues as the state and local agencies, they've often had several years head start to get policies and procedures in place. Well documented policies and procedures protect you, your agency, and your investigation. It’s just common sense.

You might be thinking, “We don’t have the resources to do what we’re being asked already!” I know, been there my friend. Here’s the thing, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has done some of the initial leg work for you. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and check out the new IACP Technology Policy Framework. Seriously Chief, cover your six.
