As each day passes law enforcement and government agencies struggle with managing more sources of digital evidence and multimedia, like body worn cameras. The massive amounts of data storage required have led many to finally consider secure cloud-based storage solutions, but as some have found out, despite the minimal capital investment cloud storage costs can quickly exceed the LE & IT budgets of even the largest agencies. Let's break this down and talk specifically about digital evidence and archiving.

How are you archiving all of your digital evidence today? A tiered storage solution? Hybrid cloud solution? LTO tape? Hard drives? Optical discs (i.e. CD-R, DVD+/-R, BD-R)? Lots of questions and options, so lets talk specifically to the last group; those using optical discs.

Microsoft, in partnership with the New York City Police Department, is announcing a new state-of-the-art law enforcement technology called Domain Awareness System. Late nights, early mornings, and a couple of days with no sleep at all over the last few weeks makes Larry want to buy stock in Starbucks. The new site is progressing well, but I just can't let go of the IE6 issues as easily as I thought I could. They're really no big deal, just some minor cosmetic issues, but when you put all this effort into a project you want visitors to at least see it the way it was designed...even those who choose not to update their FREE browsers.

If you've been here recently, you'll notice I've already changed the new site's layout. The concept is to provide a clean, user-friendly interface; not a fancy, schmancy look. I think this new layout accomplishes that, so I'm sticking with it. Of course, I've had to re-do much of the layout work I'd done on the previous design, but I think it's worth it. Now I just need a MAC user willing to be a "guinea pig".

Digital signatures enable paperless contracts and can speed up business transactions. The 2001 E-Sign Act was meant to ease the adoption of electronic signatures, yet the mechanics of what makes up an e-signature were left deliberately wide open.

Today, after nearly fifteen years of developing personal & business Web sites, I'm launcing Media-Geek.com. While Media-Geek.com will certainly serve as the successor to my personal business site (larrycompton.com) and I am always excited when deploying a new site or layout, I am even more excited about the community-based functionality that is to come.

I should point out that this is a pre-launch of Media-Geek.com, which allows me the opportunity to test the various components and functionality in the exact environment where it will be fully deployed.  All of the content from my previous site(s), as well as a ton of additional functionality will be published with the official launch.  While there won't be any parades, balloons, or free donuts, the official launch is scheduled for Monday, February 11th.   Thanks for visiting...stay tuned!  😎

Our shared goal is to improve the effectiveness of Forensic Multimedia Analysts. Following their January, 2017 meeting the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE) recently released 9 new documents for public review, including a new document called "SWGDE Framework of a Quality Management System for Digital and Multimedia Evidence Forensic Science Service Providers (DME-FSSPs)". Additionally, SWGDE published 11 Approved documents following their January meeting.

If you're involved in Forensic Multimedia Analysis, I would encourage you to visit the SWGDE website and review these documents as time permits. I'd like to thank all of those involved in SWGDE for their valuable time and contributions to our disciplines/communities.
